Undertaking a rail medical assessment forms part of meeting your worker requirements for obtaining a national Rail Industry Work (RIW) card. Rail transport operator requirements in the various states and territories, all require an Authorised Health Professional to conduct your rail medical assessment.
CATEGORY 1 RAIL MEDICALS
Workers requiring these rail medicals are known as high level safety critical workers. They are workers who perform safety critical work and whose ill health may result in sudden incapacity or collapse leading to a serious incident affecting public safety or the rail network.
Cat 1 rail medicals include:
Questionnaire
Hearing test
Vision test
Drug and alcohol screening (breath and urine analysis)
Musculoskeletal assessment
Additional tests to be completed at your appointment:
ECG
Fasting bloods (Early morning Cat 1 appointments recommended)
Category 2 Rail Medicals
Workers requiring these rail medicals undertake safety critical work where sudden incapacity will not impact on the safety of the public or the rail network.
Cat 2 rail medicals include:
Questionnaire
Hearing test
Vision test
Drug and alcohol screening (breath and urine analysis)
Musculoskeletal assessment
CATEGORY 3 RAIL MEDICALS
Workers requiring these rail medicals are known as non-safety critical workers. They are workers whose health and fitness does not impact directly on the rail network, but they are required to protect their own safety and that of other rail workers.
Cat 3 rail medicals include:
Questionnaire
Hearing test
Vision test
Drug and alcohol screening (breath and urine analysis)
Musculoskeletal assessment
